12.2.1977. Walsall 6 Reading 1.

Both teams were very much in a relegation battle going into this game with the teams joint 4th bottom and it came almost at the end of Doug Fraser's tenure. Reading actually took the lead when Mick Kearns missed out on a challenge from Barry Butlin and John Murray made no mistake. Then midway through the first half Miah Dennehy swung over a corner for Alan Buckley to volley home.

Five minutes after the interval George Andrews made it 2-1 with a trademark diving header from a Brian Caswell cross. Miah Dennehy then cut in from the right to hammer home a left foot shot into the corner of the net. With the crowd now loudly cheering Walsall on for more, Nick Atthey set Miah Dennehy clear who hammered home a terrific right foot shot this time into the left corner. A fine run from Alan Buckley saw the leading scorer supplying a perfect ball for George Andrews to claim his second of the game on 75 minutes. But the afternoon belonged to Miah Dennehy and he completed a fine hat trick two minutes later.

It was a landmark for Alan Buckley with his goal being his 100th for Walsall in just over three and a half years at the club. This fine win came just three weeks after the 5-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday. Final word on Miah Dennehy - he was given an electic shaver from the sponsors for his man of the match display!
