19.8.1961. Walsall 4 Sunderland 3.

Walsall made their return to the Second Division with an entertaining 4-3 win against Sunderland, who included new signing Brian Clough to lead their attack. With just 13 minutes on the clock Colin Asley was brought down with Tony Richards making no mistake from the penalty kick.

The lead only lasted a few minutes as the impressive Clough was in the right place to put the ball past John Christie. The visitors took the lead through George Herd with a header however Saddlers got back into the game on the stroke of half time through Tommy Wilson.

Sunderland again took the lead in the second half through Harry Hoper who converted a penalty after John Sharples had handled. However two further goals from hot shot Tony Richards saw the centre forward complete a memorable hat trick and send most of the 18,420 crowd happy.
