22.1.1977. Walsall 5 Sheffield Wednesday 1.

Following four depressing games, in which Walsall had only scored once - and that was a 1-4 defeat at Lincoln - everything clicked into gear in this game. On a wet afternoon before a gate of 7,297 which was boosted by several thousands from Sheffield, goals from Alan Birch, Brian Caswell, Bernie Wright (2) and Miah Dennehy, sealed a splendid 5-1 victory.

Things didn't look to grand for Saddlers however, when after 33 minutes Roger Wilde gave the visitors the lead, but Alan Birch put Walsall level just two minutes later. Even by the half time break as the sides went for shelter at 1-1 there was no clues as to what was about to unfold in the second half.

Early in the second period Brian Caswell gave the home side a 2-1 lead before Bernie Wright - then Miah Dennehy then Bernie Wright again piled on the agony for Wednesday who had a centre back in their line up who was destined to become a Walsall manager decades later - Jimmy Mullen. Just before the end Mick Kearns pulled off a great save to deny Tommy Tynan a goal from the penalty spot.

The team line ups that day were...

WALSALL - Kearns, Taylor, Caswell, Serella, Hynd, Atthey, Dennehy, Bates, Wright, Buckley, Birch.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY - Turner, Walden, Rushbury, Cusack, Mullen, Leman, (Prendergast) Wylde, Henson, Tynan, Hope, Bradshaw.

Miah Dennehy - who ripped the Wednesday defence apart and scored Walsall's 4th goal.
