Paul Marston On Steve Preston.

The legendary journalist Paul Marston has his say on the loss that has hit Ex - Walsall players and supporters this week......

"Very sad news came this week with the sudden death of life-long Walsall supporter Steve Preston, aged 73.

Born in Dickinson Drive, a corner kick from the old Fellows Park ground, he was a popular figure at Bescot and drove thousands of miles to watch the Saddlers in action all over the country.

Steve was a true gentleman who became great friends with many Saddlers’ stars and helped them considerably with their testimonial events.

A widower- his wife, Mo, died a few years ago – he had two daughters, one son, and several grandchildren.

One of his daughters, Faye, married a Walsall player – Gary Birch – and one of their children, Sophie, is a very keen footballer.

Steve’s father owned butchers shops in Caldmore and Bloxwich during his working life.

At the time of writing the funeral had not been arranged."
