On this day in 1973 (19th March) Fellows Park witnessed a 7 goal thriller with Walsall defeating Bristol Rovers 4-3 with two goals in stoppage time to grab an unlikely win. Bobby Shinton put Saddlers one up on 10 minutes . Two goals in 7 mins from Bannister and Warboys gave Rovers a 2-1 lead by the 57th minute before Chris Jones levelled it at 2-2. Warboys got his second late on in what looked a certain 3-2 victory for our visitors.
In the second minute of stoppage time Chris Jones made it 3-3 and with the referee just about to blow for full time four minutes later Bernie Wright completed our comeback with a header to give us an amazing 4-3 victory. The night started off with a bomb scare and this game also marked the debut of 16 year old Alan Birch who came on as a substitute. What a night!
